Gradings

From white belt to black belt

Progress in Shito-Ryu is measured through the kyu (coloured-belt) grades. At each grading students show their basics (kihon), kata and kumite, and every new belt is earned, never given.

After the kyu grades comes shodan, the first-degree black belt, and then the higher Dan grades. Since May 2026, black belt and Dan examinations to World Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Federation standards are held in India with visiting international examiners.
